This was a big deal. University study is not easy. Practical placement as a nursing student is not easy. Raising one child is like a full time job, let alone raising three children, one of whom has high needs. And make time for darling husband, of course. Ok, now throw all of those together at once, and make sure all are completed at a high standard and in a timely manner.
I don’t know how she did it, but this gal surely did. It was such a big deal to have done it and made it to the end, that Monique asked me to come and photograph her graduation from Nursing at USQ in Toowoomba. Whether it was to show the world she could do it or even just to bookmark the occasion and feel proud of her achievement, a photo shoot was definitely called for.
Monique is planning to study further and become a doctor. I believe she will do just that.
At the University of Southern Queensland, the tradition is for the graduating students and their professors to march through the streets of Toowoomba in a parade of honour. Monique’s was the first parade of graduates I had witnessed. I saw nothing but bright, beautiful, smiling faces on students and their families alike. Chests bursting with pride. I found it hard to contain the pride myself! It really is something you don’t want to miss if you are in town at the right time.
The parade ended at the gorgeous, iconic Empire Theatre. There, the stage was something to behold: a mixture of Tudor-style caps and gowns, reminiscent of an English university. The speeches were the same: dignified and congratulatory, befitting such a great achievement.
Monique’s turn came to walk across the stage to accept her certificate, and in her true outgoing and fearless self, waved to everyone and posed for me to take the photo! See for yourself in the photos, it’s priceless.
Congratulations on your Bachelors Degree! X
